Nagpur has been officially designated as a tourism district by the Maharashtra Tourism Department, giving the city and its surrounding region a stronger institutional framework for tourism development.
The move is expected to bring greater attention to Nagpur’s heritage, wildlife, cultural and experiential tourism potential while encouraging fresh investment in hospitality, visitor infrastructure and tourism-related services.
Tax Benefits Extended for Tourism Businesses
One of the key measures linked to the new designation is the extension of tax-related benefits available to tourism and hospitality businesses. The benefit period has been increased from seven years to ten years, potentially creating a more favourable environment for businesses planning investments in the sector.
Nagpur as a Gateway to Vidarbha
Nagpur’s strategic location and connectivity position it as an important access point for exploring the wider Vidarbha region. The area offers a combination of wildlife destinations, natural landscapes, heritage attractions and cultural experiences.
Among the prominent wildlife destinations accessible from Nagpur are Pench, Tadoba, Nagzira and Navegaon, while the city and its surrounding areas also feature lakes, forests, museums and heritage sites.
The tourism district status could further support the development of regional tourism circuits, allowing Nagpur to function not only as an urban destination but also as a base for travellers exploring Vidarbha.
Greater Focus on Tourism Infrastructure
The designation is expected to encourage investment across areas such as accommodation, visitor facilities, attractions and other tourism services. It also provides greater institutional focus for promoting Nagpur and the wider region as a structured tourism destination.
The development comes as Maharashtra continues efforts to strengthen tourism infrastructure and broaden its destination portfolio, with increasing attention on regions beyond the state’s traditional tourism centres.
